In observance of World Polio Day, October 24, and Rotary International’s ongoing efforts to fight polio worldwide, The Rotary Club of Pecatonica is sponsoring a presentation on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:00 pm at the Pecatonica Public Library. World Polio Day: The Past, Present and Future of Polio will be presented by Dr. Alice Hemenway, clinical associate professor, University of Illinois-Chicago College of Pharmacy, Rockford campus.
Two 4th year pharmacy students will also be presenting. They will review the history of the disease, the world-changing impact of the polio vaccine, current issues with polio outbreaks and how we can all help eradicate the disease.
Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio for over 35 years and is a founding partner of The Global Polio Eradication Initiative. In addition to monetary support through donations, Rotary members have volunteered for years to distribute vaccines around the world.
Locally, the rotary Club has placed change canisters in many local businesses and stores for the month of October. All donations will be matched by the club as part of their World Polio Day service.
