Elimination of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from Culebra, Puerto Rico

As you may know District 6420 is involved in a nearly $200,000 Global Grant with the San Juan, Puerto Rico Rotary Club to eliminate the Aedes aegypti mosquito from an entire beautiful island (Culebra) in Puerto Rico.

This grant has been underway for nearly a year and lots of progress has been made.  With our support, the implementing agency – the Puerto Rico Vector Control Unit (PRVCU) - has completed the following activities:
  1. Mapped all 459 structures on the island.
  2. Established surveillance for adult female mosquitoes throughout the residential areas of the island.
  3. Visited 180 houses to conduct surveys about mosquito control knowledge, attitudes, and practices and perform container surveys.
  4. Commenced community engagement activities with local island organizations and schools.
  5. Worked with the local medical clinic to post educational posters and other signage about how mosquitoes are transmitted and how to prevent transmission.
  6. Identified a major mosquito egg laying source in the downtown community fountain which was transformed with the help of many community organizations including the San Juan Rotary Club into a new and beautiful community garden.
  7. Placed adult mosquito traps for control purposes in the downtown areas with the highest mosquito population density.
If you are interested in visiting this exciting project, please know that the San Juan Rotary Club would welcome you with open arms.
