On Saturday morning, March 8th, a group of high school students gathered to gain essential life skills that will serve them well in the years to come. With experts in emotional, physical, and financial safety, the event was a powerful opportunity for students to learn how to protect themselves in today's complex world. Thanks to the generous support of the District Grant, this event provided a strong foundation for personal growth and future success.

Spotting the Signs: Human Trafficking Awareness
Heidi Provo, from Remedies, kicked off the event by sharing insights from their “I Rise” program. With her personal connection to the issue—having a daughter who is a survivor—Heidi emphasized that human trafficking is not just a far-off problem; it can happen anywhere, even in rural Illinois. Through this powerful presentation, students learned the critical warning signs of trafficking, how to spot grooming behaviors, and resources available for those in need of help. Heidi’s message was clear: awareness and early intervention are key to fighting this horrific issue.
Personal Safety Beyond the Basics
Next, Bill Kaiser from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office dove into personal safety strategies. Covering topics like distracted driving, social media safety, and the importance of always keeping someone informed of your whereabouts, Bill equipped students with practical tools for everyday safety. He also shared an often-overlooked tip: keep your phone’s location finder on, ensuring that someone always knows where you are in case of an emergency.
A Creative Break for Reflection and Growth
After a brief break, the students participated in a unique interactive art project led by Sherri Holoubek from Rosecrance. This activity encouraged self-reflection and goal setting, providing students with an opportunity to visualize their future and embrace their emotions. The art project not only offered a mental break but also emphasized the importance of emotional health—reminding everyone that success is not just about physical safety but mental and emotional resilience as well.
Fraud Awareness Through Fun and Games
The day wrapped up with an engaging and educational activity hosted by Shari Snyder and Eddie Pinedo from Solutions Bank. Students were divided into teams and tasked with examining emails, texts, and messages to identify red flags of fraud. Watching students enthusiastically compete to spot potential scams was a fun way to end the event—and it was no surprise to see that the younger generation excelled at spotting these technical threats! The exercise was a reminder that financial safety is just as important as physical and emotional well-being.
Connecting and Reflecting Over Lunch
After a morning full of learning, students enjoyed a lunch that allowed them to network, discuss volunteer opportunities, and explore programs like RYLA. It was also a special moment when students were able to connect with two international exchange students—one from Paraguay and one from Germany— emphasizing Rotary's global reach and the importance of cross-cultural understanding.
Gratitude and Looking Forward
This event was made possible by the District Grant and would not have been possible without the dedication of the experts and organizers who made it a reality. The morning was filled with powerful lessons, meaningful connections, and a sense of hope for the future. These students are now better equipped to navigate life's challenges with confidence and awareness—and that’s a win for us all.
