ROCKFORD — Kirsten ‘Kiki’ Fisher, a May graduate of Bradley University from Roscoe, and Mohammad Salem, a May graduate of Yale University from Rockford, will be introduced as the recipients of $30,000 Global Scholarships from Rotary District 6420 at a noon news conference on Thursday, Sept. 18, at Veterans Memorial Hall in Rockford.
A graduate of Hononegah Community High School in Rockton, Ms. Fisher will enlist her scholarship award to pursue a Master of Science in Forensic Medicine, Anthropology and Imaging with a specialty in Forensic Anthropology from the University of Crete Medical School in Heraklion, Greece, beginning in October.

Mr. Salem, a graduate of Rockford Auburn High School, will pursue a Master of Science in Health System Evaluation and Improvement at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, also beginning in October.
The two impressive scholars were selected from among a pool of applicants from across Rotary District 6420, a coalition of 48 Rotary organizations from across northwestern Illinois.
Both award winners met the stringent requirements of high academic achievement, a demonstrated commitment to enlist their graduate education to meet the Rotary mission of “Service Above Self,” and a capacity and interest in serving as global ambassadors for Rotary International.
The winners were selected by a committee representing Rotary organizations from across District 6420.
“We are excited to introduce these two future servant leaders and remarkable representatives of the Rockford area educational system,” said Laura Davis, a past Moline Rotary Club president and chair of the selection committee. “Our committee was incredibly impressed by each of these applicants, their commitment to enhancing their knowledge and career preparation through unique and challenging international graduate programs, and especially by their passion for taking their knowledge into the world in service to humankind.”
Ms. Davis will be joined in introducing Ms. Fisher and Mr. Salem to local media by 2025-2026 District 6420 Governor Melissa McCormick.
Ms. Fisher is the daughter of Erin Fisher, Roscoe, and Christopher Fisher, South Beloit. She earned her Bradley University Bachelor of Science degrees in Biomedical Science with a Pre-Medicine concentration, and Interdisciplinary Studies concentrating in Physical Anthropology. She previously studied at Rock Valley College in Rockford, and Eastern Iowa Community College in Clinton, Iowa.
She plans to pursue a medical degree in the United States after completing her master’s studies at the University of Crete. Her interest in Forensic Medicine, Anthropology and Imaging was fostered by an internship in the Allen County (Indiana) Coroner’s Office in 2023, when, through determined research, she was able to help locate the family of a deceased Cuban immigrant so they could be informed them of their loved one’s death.
Ms. Fisher is particularly interested in the global applications of forensic anthropology as a tool for seeking justice, and advancing post-conflict resolution and peace-building.
Mr. Salem is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Salem of Rockford. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Yale University in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, while also earning a certificate in Global Health Studies.
His global health capstone at Yale was published in collaboration with Anurita Bains, Associate Director for HIV/AIDS at UNICEF, and ultimately served as a policy brief on financing the HIV/AIDS response in SubSaharan Africa. The brief addressed the need for governments to reduce their reliance on funding from the Global North and instead strengthen their own local health systems to tackle challenges in-country.
Mr. Salem initially plans to pursue a career in public health and policy. Ultimately, he hopes to build a longterm career in advancing public health initiatives at the World Health Organization.
Please join us in introducing these impressive scholars to the Greater Rockford community as they prepare to take the next steps in their missions to build a better world.
